Kenyan Cult Leader Convicted of 191 Murders in Deadly Starvation Scheme
Pastor Paul Mackenzie is convicted on 191 murder charges after forcing followers to starve to death in a horrific Kenyan doomsday cult tragedy.
POLICY WIRE — Mombasa, Kenya — A Kenyan pastor has been convicted on 191 murder charges following a harrowing investigation into a doomsday cult that coerced followers into fatal starvation. The court ruled that Paul Mackenzie and his associates utilized a rigid church hierarchy to enforce a deadly fasting regimen, claiming it would allow members to enter heaven and reunite with Jesus.
The murder convictions specifically address the deaths of 190 children and one adult. Beyond these charges, Mackenzie and his co-defendants face additional legal battles involving terrorism, child torture, and manslaughter related to the deaths of over 230 other individuals. While the defendants have maintained their innocence, they are currently awaiting sentencing, which is set for November 6 and could result in life imprisonment.
The tragedy first came to light in April 2023 after Mackenzie relocated his Good News International Church from the coastal town of Malindi to the remote Shakahola Forest. Authorities discovered a scene of devastation, uncovering hundreds of bodies in shallow graves across the ranch. Survivors reported that the sect, which had been active since 2003, used violence to prevent members from leaving or resisting the enforced starvation that persisted for more than two years.
