Trump and Sheinbaum Near ‘Great’ Trade Deal Amid Ongoing Negotiations
President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are nearing a major trade agreement. Policy Wire tracks the latest on US-Mexico relations.
POLICY WIRE — Park City, Kansas — President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States and Mexico are nearing the final stages of a significant trade agreement. The president described the potential pact as a great deal for both nations.
The progress follows a telephone conversation held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, between President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to a U.S. official and an individual familiar with the discussion, the two leaders are actively working to bridge the remaining gaps in their bilateral negotiations.
President Sheinbaum confirmed on Friday that her administration is exerting every effort to secure a deal in the near future. She noted that the recent dialogue with her American counterpart was productive and has contributed to tangible progress ahead of scheduled bilateral talks regarding the USMCA trade agreement.
The current push for a resolution arrives in the wake of a breakdown in trade discussions between the United States and Canada last month. That collapse resulted in a contentious series of retaliatory tariffs between the two neighbors.
Negotiations are currently focused on addressing existing U.S. duties on Mexican steel and aluminum, which are currently set at 50 percent, as well as issues surrounding the automotive sector. Officials from both countries maintain that the ongoing talks are moving in a positive direction.
