Palestinian Activist Mahmoud Khalil Petitions US Supreme Court to Block Deportation and Re-Arrest
Pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil petitions the US Supreme Court to halt his deportation and prevent re-arrest following a federal appeals court ruling.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — Pro-Palestinian activist and former Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil is taking his legal battle to the highest court in the nation.
Lawyers for Khalil announced plans on Monday to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in his ongoing deportation case. The move comes after a federal appeals court declined to reconsider a prior decision that brought the administration of President Donald Donald Trump one step closer to re-arresting and deporting him.
If the ruling from the 3rd Circuit is allowed to take effect, Khalil faces the immediate threat of being taken into custody again and expelled from the country. However, an appeals court has granted the activist a temporary stay while he officially petitions the Supreme Court to review his detention matter.
The legal saga dates back to June 2025, when a federal judge originally ordered Khalil released from custody. Despite that judicial order, federal authorities have continued their efforts to deport the former student, prompting his defense team to seek emergency Supreme Court intervention.
