Beijing Faces ‘Super-Aged’ Milestone by 2035 as Demographic Shift Accelerates
Beijing is projected to reach super-aged status by 2035, with one-third of residents over 60. Explore the city's policy response to this demographic shift.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — The Chinese capital is on track to reach a super-aged status by 2035, according to data published by the official Beijing Daily. Projections indicate that approximately one-third of the city’s residents will be aged 60 or older by that time.
This demographic transition represents a significant shift for the capital, where residents aged 60 and above already accounted for nearly one-quarter of the total population by the end of last year. With a total resident population of approximately 21.858 million, the city is currently navigating the complexities of a rapidly aging society.
In response to these trends, municipal authorities have intensified efforts to bolster support for elderly residents. Recent initiatives include strengthening legal protections for senior care, enhancing social security frameworks, and promoting the integration of medical services with elderly care industries.
National policymakers have increasingly prioritized population planning as a cornerstone of China’s broader economic strategy. This year, the government faces a total potential cost of around 180 billion yuan as it works to address the challenges posed by a shrinking national workforce and an aging populace.
