Premier League Star Antoine Semenyo Froze After Alleged Racial Abuse, Court Hears
Premier League footballer Antoine Semenyo froze after alleged racial abuse at Anfield. Court hears trial details as defendant is hospitalized.
POLICY WIRE — Liverpool, United Kingdom — Premier League footballer Antoine Semenyo froze in shock after being subjected to alleged racial abuse from a spectator during a match last year, a court has been told.
Liverpool Magistrates’ Court heard that the incident took place at Anfield roughly 30 minutes into the opening match of the Premier League season on August 15 last year.
At the time of the incident, Semenyo was playing for Bournemouth and had approached the sideline to take a throw-in when the alleged offense occurred.
Mark Mogan, a 47-year-old Liverpool fan, stands accused of shouting racial slurs directly at the professional athlete.
The legal proceedings took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when Mogan had to be transported to a hospital partway through his ongoing trial.
