Trump DOJ Targets Rep. Ilhan Omar in Federal Probe Focused on Citizenship and Birth Date
Federal agents raid Rep. Ilhan Omar's home as the Trump administration investigates her citizenship application and birth date ahead of the midterms.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Federal investigators are zeroing in on the citizenship application and date of birth of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing probe by the Trump administration.
Agents from Homeland Security Investigations, which operates as the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, executed a raid early Monday morning at the Minnesota congresswoman’s residence in Washington, D.C.
According to sources familiar with the matter, including a Trump administration official speaking to The Washington Post, the Department of Justice and Homeland Security are examining whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, deliberately altered her birth date on official immigration paperwork.
Omar, who arrived in the United States as a refugee at age 12 in 1995 and has held U.S. citizenship for 26 years, represents the first Somali American elected to Congress. Investigators are probing whether her birth date was manipulated to secure derivative citizenship as a minor through her father in the year 2000, a claim previously raised by a former Republican congressional candidate in 2019.
Following Monday’s raid, Jacklyn Rogers, a spokesperson for the congresswoman, maintained that Omar has done nothing wrong. Rogers added that no president should be allowed to weaponize the power of the federal government to intimidate political opponents.
Omar herself issued a defiant statement vowing that she will not be silenced by the probe, which coincides with a sensitive political window just weeks before the midterm elections. The Justice Department has been contacted for comment regarding the timing and scope of the investigation.
President Donald Trump distanced himself from the operation during a post on Truth Social following the raid. While calling her a terrible person and claiming he was not personally involved, Trump asserted that he has always found her to be totally crooked and stated that the matter is up to the DOJ.
In subsequent posts on Tuesday, Trump celebrated the inquiry and questioned Omar’s finances and immigration history without providing evidence. Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that her office has opened a separate investigation into Omar’s financial disclosure forms.
House Democratic leadership immediately denounced the federal actions, pointing out the suspicious timing with less than 30 days remaining until the midterm elections. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries released a statement condemning the raid as a deeply disturbing example of the corrupt weaponization of federal agencies against political adversaries.
