University of Maryland suspends club tennis team over racist KKK symbols in tournament materials. Investigation underway.
POLICY WIRE — College Park, United States — The University of Maryland has placed its club tennis team on indefinite suspension following the discovery of racist KKK symbols in tournament materials distributed to other university teams.
The incident came to light when staff from the university’s Recreation and Wellness department found that members of the Maryland Club Tennis organization had emailed the materials to other clubs ahead of a weekend fall tournament at the College Park campus. Howard University, a historically Black institution in Washington, D.C., was among those who received the documents.
The university expressed deep concern over the incident, with officials stating they were “horrified” and offering a sincere apology for the harm caused. The entire club team was suspended pending the outcome of an investigation by the University of Maryland Police Department and the Office of Student Conduct. The team also forfeited its matches, while the tournament continued for other participants.
