POLICY WIRE — Cheyenne, Wyoming — A University of Wyoming microbiology graduate student from China has been arrested on charges of poisoning a colleague’s tea, with the suspect attempting to flee to China following police questioning.
Aili Wang, 32, was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport on October 6, where prosecutors allege she sought to return to her home country. Police found laptops, electronic storage devices, and documents in her possession, which they claim were related to the incident. Surveillance footage showed Wang rummaging through the desk of the victim, who specialized in technology for disease treatment—research similar to what she had done in China.
The case began when the victim, identified as “K.T.” in court documents, started experiencing symptoms that led his wife and others to test the water from his coffee maker. They detected acrylamide, a chemical known for its toxicity. The investigation revealed that Wang had purchased the substance online and was seen manipulating the victim’s notebook and mug. She faces felony charges in Wyoming, with a bond increased to $1.5 million.
