Elizabeth Holmes Documentary ‘You Can See Everything’ Earns Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Critics hail the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary, You Can See Everything, as a masterpiece. Discover why this film earned a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Critics are hailing the new documentary about convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes as a cinematic triumph, with the film securing a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its American release.
Titled You Can See Everything, the project was directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. The filmmakers spent three years secretly documenting Holmes, eventually gaining access to her home in the final days before she began her prison sentence.
Holmes, 42, was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of fraud in 2022. She had previously claimed her company, Theranos, created a revolutionary device capable of diagnosing various medical conditions using only a few drops of blood, though the technology was later proven to be non-functional. She began serving her sentence at a facility in Texas in May 2023.
The documentary is scheduled for a US theatrical release on 16 October, followed by a UK debut on 20 November. In addition to its perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, the film holds a score of 97 on Metacritic, where it has been categorized as having achieved universal acclaim.
Reviewers have offered high praise for the work. The Daily Beast described it as not just the film of the year, but a documentary that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the form’s all-time greats. The Guardian labeled the project a modern masterpiece of deceit, noting that the hype is deserved and calling it a stupefying and glorious destabilising hall of psychological mirrors.
Other critics highlighted the film’s unconventional approach. Variety characterized the movie as a one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus, while Screen Daily noted that the film demonstrates the fallacy of reality in art while acknowledging that everyone—including the filmmakers, Holmes, and her partner Billy Evans—distorts the truth for their own purposes.
The project aligns with the career of Fielder, a comedian known for his absurdist and unsettling work, such as the HBO series The Rehearsal and the satirical show Nathan for You. During a trailer released in September, Holmes is seen telling Fielder, I don’t have anything to deceive you on. Of course I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that.
The film held its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September, where attendees were required to secure their mobile devices in pouches during the screening. The documentary arrives in US theaters later this week.
