Bipartisan Senators Condemn Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal as ‘Betrayal’ of Ukraine
Bipartisan senators urge Trump to cancel Russian diesel deal, calling it a betrayal of Ukraine and threat to U.S. security.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — A coalition of bipartisan U.S. senators has called on President Donald Trump to reverse his recent agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply American and global markets with Russian diesel fuel, labeling the move as a direct affront to U.S. national interests and a betrayal of Ukraine.
The senators emphasized that the deal, which includes an immediate shipment of 300,000 tons of diesel followed by additional supplies in the coming months, undermines American security and emboldens Russia’s military actions in the region. They argued that the agreement, which also involves temporarily lifting sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, would not significantly lower fuel prices for Americans but could provide critical financial support to Moscow’s ongoing war efforts.
In a letter released Tuesday, a group of 12 senators—seven Republicans and five Democrats—expressed strong concerns over the decision. They highlighted that while there is broad public support for ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, any resolution must be based on just terms that protect democratic values, Ukrainian sovereignty, and the right of its people to determine their own future. The lawmakers urged the president to rescind the agreement and enforce the existing sanctions framework to maintain America’s leadership in promoting freedom and stability globally.
