Stellantis to build small electric cars in Italy with Leapmotor, targeting 2028 launch and Europe's EV demand.
POLICY WIRE — Mirafiori, Italy — Stellantis is set to manufacture compact electric vehicles in Italy using a shared e-car platform developed in collaboration with Chinese automaker Leapmotor. This move marks a key step in the company’s strategy to expand its presence in the European electric vehicle market.
The initiative leverages Leapmotor’s technological expertise to fast-track development, allowing Stellantis to create new models in just two years. The partnership also includes plans for mass production of affordable electric cars priced around €15,000, aiming to meet growing consumer demand for low-cost options.
As part of this expanded collaboration, Stellantis will increase production at its Zaragoza plant, where an all-new Opel C-SUV is expected to be manufactured. Components sourced through their joint venture, LPMI, are anticipated to boost efficiency and competitiveness in the region.
