India’s Inflation Surges to 5.54% in September, Fueling Calls for More Rate Hikes
India's inflation hits 5.54% in September, pushing central bank closer to rate hikes amid rising food costs.
POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — India’s retail inflation surged to 5.54% in September, marking the highest level in 23 months and raising concerns about monetary policy direction.
The increase, driven largely by rising food prices, particularly vegetables, pushed the rate above the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 4% target and near its upper tolerance limit of 6%. This follows a fourth consecutive month of inflation exceeding the central bank’s benchmark.
Rural areas experienced higher inflation at 6.08%, compared to 4.88% in urban centers. The RBI had recently raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points on October 7, signaling potential further tightening as inflation remains elevated.
