Renoir Masterpieces Found Hidden Behind Wall in French Art Heist Recovery
Stolen Renoir paintings found hidden behind cinder block wall in France. Authorities confirm damage and arrests in high-profile art heist.
POLICY WIRE — Cagnes-sur-Mer, France — Two Renoir artworks, stolen from a museum in southern France, were recovered last week after being hidden behind a solid cinder block wall, according to prosecutors.
The paintings, which had been valued at $10 million, were taken during a break-in in September. Thieves fled with two of the four works, leaving the others behind. The recovered pieces included ‘Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano’ and ‘Young Woman at the Well.’
Authorities said the paintings were discovered during a search of a home in Clermont-l’Herault on Thursday. A 29-year-old man was charged following DNA evidence linking him to the theft. While the works were in relatively good condition, both showed signs of damage, including a torn canvas and a damaged frame. Restoration is expected to be necessary.
