Nepal Issues Evacuation Orders After Landslide Triggers Major Flood
Nepal urges villagers to evacuate as flood from landslide damages homes and infrastructure. No casualties reported.
POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — Authorities in Nepal have issued urgent evacuation orders to residents in the Gorkha district following a severe flood caused by a landslide that destroyed several homes, bridges, and damaged a hydroelectric project.
The incident occurred after a dry landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, leading to downstream flooding. Officials warned that the river, which is a tributary of the Trishuli, continues to rise with muddy sludge, threatening additional damage to infrastructure and communities.
Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, the top bureaucrat in Gorkha, urged people living along the riverbanks to relocate to safer areas. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority also issued alerts to residents in multiple districts, including Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi. Rescue teams, including the military, are on the ground monitoring the situation and assisting with evacuations.
