POLICY WIRE — Cairo, Egypt — At least 13 artisanal miners were killed in an airstrike targeting a gold mining area along the Sudan-Egypt border, according to a medical group. The attack occurred in the Border Triangle Area, where small-scale gold mining is common.
The Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) confirmed that 28 individuals were also injured in the bombing. Meanwhile, a Sudanese rights group, The Emergency Lawyers, claimed that airstrikes on a gold mine near the border resulted in the deaths of 72 workers, accusing Egypt’s air force of carrying out the attack.
Additional reports from Darfur24 indicate that at least 15 people were killed and more than 50 injured after airstrikes hit artisanal gold mining sites near Sudan’s border with Egypt. The strikes targeted the Jabal al-Uqaydat area northeast of Atbara in River Nile State, one of Sudan’s most active traditional gold mining zones.
