Three Dead, Including Suspect, After Violent Shooting at Downtown Minneapolis Apartment Complex

POLICY WIRE — Minneapolis, USA — A violent shooting erupted inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday, leaving three people dead—including the perpetrator—and six others injured.

Among the casualties were three Minneapolis police officers. Two officers sustained gunshot wounds, while a third suffered different injuries during the response, according to police Sgt. Garrett Parten.

Hennepin County Medical Center confirmed that all three officers are currently in stable condition.

The emergency began just after 4:30 p.m. when a 911 call reported gunfire at the complex. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson stated that officers entered the premises in under two minutes and quickly located victims.

As officers pursued further gunshots to an upper floor, they encountered a haze that severely obstructed their vision, though Peterson did not elaborate on the nature of the haze.

One officer was struck in the leg, and another took two bullets to the abdomen. Peterson noted that all three injured officers are expected to recover fully.

While officials did not release the identity of the shooter, they indicated that the individual was known to them prior to the incident.

“I’m truly sickened by this level of violence,” Peterson said. “That feeling is tempered only by the courageous actions of the Minneapolis police officers, who responded without hesitation, confronted an extraordinarily dangerous situation and worked to end the violence and restore safety.”

One victim died at the scene, and a second succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital. Sgt. Parten stated it is not yet clear how the suspect died.

Hennepin County Medical Center reported treating seven patients in total but declined to provide further medical details.

Witness Julius Bailey, who moved into the building in June, told reporters he was outside when he heard eight shots and saw a woman screaming.

Bailey identified the gunman as a fellow resident who was known for flaunting his firearm, noting that he had intentionally avoided the man.

Another resident, Chris Miller, described hearing a rapid burst of gunfire before fleeing the building. Miller claimed he believed he knew the shooter and had previously reported seeing a person with a handgun in the hallway to building management earlier in the week.

Social media footage captured police deploying rifles toward an apartment tower situated near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Authorities advised the public to steer clear of the Loring Park area.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced via social media that state resources were deployed to assist local police.

“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that the bureau was responding to the scene and would provide all necessary resources to support local investigators.
