Emergency Rescues Underway as Catastrophic Flooding Swamps Four Corners Region
Severe flooding hits the Four Corners region, forcing rooftop rescues and mass evacuations. Follow the latest updates on this unfolding weather emergency.
POLICY WIRE — Fort Collins, Colo. — Severe flooding across the Four Corners region has triggered urgent water rescues, with emergency crews plucking stranded residents from rooftops as rising waters rendered numerous roads impassable. Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for low-lying areas throughout Colorado and New Mexico, while advising others to shelter in place until conditions stabilize.
The deluge stems from intense rainfall concentrated where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah converge. In Farmington, New Mexico, hundreds of households along the San Juan River were directed to evacuate, while residents across the Navajo Nation prepared for floodwaters expected to crest between late Friday and early Saturday. Navajo Nation Deputy Police Chief Donnie Kee emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging families to prioritize their safety and that of their livestock immediately.
This weather crisis follows a week of extreme conditions, including damaging tornadoes and heavy rains that impacted Arizona and Utah. San Juan County spokesperson Devin Neeley reported that National Guard units utilized boats and helicopters to reach citizens trapped in homes submerged under several feet of water. Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe described the surge as a once-in-a-generation event, noting that the Animas River is expected to bring even higher water levels downstream.
In southern Colorado, the flooding has surpassed historic benchmarks, exceeding levels seen during a 100-year flood event just one year ago. Archuleta County Sheriff Mike Le Roux confirmed that rescue teams were deployed to reach individuals stranded in a submerged motor home, though no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported thus far. Governor Jared Polis has officially declared a disaster emergency across 11 counties to facilitate the response.
