Ofgem Announces 4% Increase in Energy Price Cap for UK Households

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has announced that the energy price cap will increase by 4% in October, affecting millions of households across the United Kingdom.

This adjustment will raise the average annual energy bill by approximately £92, according to Ofgem. The price cap, which sets the maximum amount suppliers can charge for each unit of gas and electricity, is reviewed every three months to reflect changes in wholesale energy costs and other relevant factors.

Ofgem stated, “The price cap ensures that customers on standard variable tariffs receive a fair price for their energy. The upcoming increase is a result of higher wholesale gas prices and adjustments to network and environmental costs.”

Households currently pay an average of £2,309 per year for their energy, and the increase will push this figure to around £2,401. This rise comes at a time when many families are already grappling with the cost-of-living crisis, exacerbated by inflation and other economic pressures.

Energy suppliers are required to inform their customers about the changes well in advance. Ofgem has urged consumers to compare prices and consider switching to a cheaper tariff if available. The regulator also highlighted that those on fixed-rate deals will not be affected by this increase until their contracts expire.

The announcement has sparked reactions from consumer advocacy groups, who argue that continuous price hikes are placing an undue burden on low-income households. “This increase will hit hard for those already struggling to make ends meet,” said a spokesperson for a leading consumer organization. “it is crucial that the government and regulators explore additional measures to support vulnerable consumers.”

In response, a government representative noted, “We understand the concerns and are committed to providing support through various schemes, including the Energy Bills Support Scheme and the Household Support Fund.” They added that long-term solutions involve investing in renewable energy sources to reduce dependency on volatile gas markets.
