POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — The United States’ special envoy to Syria has revealed that Israel did not provide Washington with prior notification before conducting an airstrike on an air base in northern Syria. This disclosure comes amid growing concerns over potential escalations with Turkey.
Joel Rayburn, the US special envoy for Syria engagement, made the statement during a press briefing. “Israel did not warn us ahead of the strike on the air base in northern Syria,” Rayburn said. “There were significant fears of escalation, particularly with Turkey, given the proximity and geopolitical sensitivities.”
The airstrike, which targeted an air base reportedly used by Iranian-backed forces, has heightened tensions in an already volatile region. The US has long advocated for de-escalation and coordination among allied nations to prevent unintended conflicts.
Rayburn’s comments underscore the complexity of the situation in Syria, where multiple international actors are involved. The lack of prior notification from Israel to the US adds another layer of concern for American officials, who are keen to manage the delicate balance of power in the region.
Turkey, which has its own military operations in northern Syria, expressed strong condemnation of the airstrike. Ankara views any foreign military action in the area as a threat to its national security and has called for greater international coordination to address the crisis.
The incident also raises questions about the communication and coordination between Israel and its allies, particularly the US, in conducting military operations. The US has historically sought to maintain open lines of communication with Israel to prevent misunderstandings and ensure strategic alignment.
In response to the airstrike, the US State Department issued a statement urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. “We call on all sides to de-escalate and engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict,” a State Department spokesperson said.
The revelation by the US envoy comes at a time when the international community is increasingly concerned about the ongoing conflict in Syria and its broader implications for regional stability. The involvement of multiple foreign powers, including Russia and Iran, adds to the complexity of the situation.
