POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Sandra Bullock was visibly moved to tears during a recent appearance on the Today show podcast Making Space, where host Hoda Kotb revealed that the actress played a pivotal role in her decision to become a mother.
Kotb, 61, shared that she had reached a point at age 51 where she believed she had missed her chance to have children. Her perspective shifted in 2010 after she saw a news report detailing that Bullock had adopted her son, Louis, from New Orleans.
The anchor recalled searching for Bullock’s age online and realizing they were the same age, which provided her with a sense of hope. She reached out to the Gravity star at the time to ask what the experience was like, and Bullock’s candid response about the joys of motherhood encouraged her to pursue adoption.
Kotb recounted that after filling out the necessary paperwork, she eventually sent a text to Bullock from a plane, informing her that she was on her way to pick up her own child. She credited the actress with changing the course of her life, noting that she is now the mother of a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old because of that initial inspiration.
When Kotb attempted to express her deep gratitude to Bullock, who was joined by her Practical Magic 2 co-star Nicole Kidman, the actress became emotional and asked the host to stop. Bullock wiped away tears, stating that she was not going to let the conversation go any further in that direction.
Kidman praised Bullock’s willingness to offer personal guidance, describing it as a form of sisterhood. Bullock explained that when people are truly fulfilled by their life choices, they have no desire to gatekeep or judge others, preferring instead to share their happiness.

Reflecting on the advice she received, Kotb noted that Bullock had encouraged her not to live in a box, emphasizing that families are formed in many different ways. Bullock added that she constantly reminds herself to avoid limiting her own desires despite the noise of the outside world.
Hoda Kotb is the mother of two daughters, Haley Joy, born in 2017, and Hope Catherine, born in 2019. Sandra Bullock is the mother of 16-year-old Louis Bardo and 12-year-old Laila.
