POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A recent evaluation by Which? nutrition experts has unveiled significant discrepancies in the potency of omega-3 supplements available in the UK market. The study assessed 24 popular omega-3 products against the guidelines established by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN).
The findings indicate that several supplements marketed as “high strength” contain considerably lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids than advertised. This revelation raises concerns about the efficacy — and value of these products for consumers.
The SACN provides specific recommendations for the daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids, emphasizing their importance for heart health and cognitive function. The Which? study aimed to determine whether the tested supplements met these standards.
Results showed that while some brands adhered closely to the SACN guidelines, others fell significantly short. The discrepancy in potency suggests that consumers may not be receiving the health benefits they expect from these supplements.
“It’s crucial for consumers to be aware of these variations,” said a Which? spokesperson. “Choosing a supplement that doesn’t deliver the promised amount of omega-3 could mean missing out on important health benefits.”
The study didn’t disclose specific brand names but highlighted the need for greater transparency and regulation in the supplement industry. Experts recommend that consumers look for third-party testing and certifications to ensure they’re purchasing effective products.
This research comes amid growing consumer interest in dietary supplements, driven by increasing awareness of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. However, the variability in product quality underscores the importance of informed purchasing decisions.
