Disney Outpaces Theme Park Rivals With Strategic Discounting and Summer Promotions
Disney theme parks see attendance rise 3% as aggressive discounts and family-friendly deals attract visitors while competitors face a summer slump.
POLICY WIRE — Orlando, USA — Disney is successfully bucking the broader theme park industry downturn, reporting higher visitor numbers than major competitors like Universal and SeaWorld.
Attendance at Disney parks climbed 3 percent during the most recent quarter compared to the same period last year. Projections indicate this upward trend will persist through the remainder of the year.
This growth marks the most significant attendance increase for the company since 2023, a period defined by a post-pandemic surge in travel. The gains are particularly notable given the industry-wide summer slump, which typically sees a decline in visitors during the hottest months in Florida.
In contrast, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld have both reported a decline in guest numbers. SeaWorld attributed its lower foot traffic to unfavorable weather conditions in July and a reduction in international tourism to the United States.

Comcast Chief Financial Officer Jason Armstrong noted that Universal has faced headwinds from elevated gas prices and expensive airfare. Additionally, the opening of Universal’s Epic Universe park last year may have prompted some travelers to defer their vacations until 2025.
Travel agents report that Disney has effectively countered these market pressures by prioritizing affordability. Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnson stated that the company is actively focused on implementing discounts and price reductions to encourage domestic travel.
The company has bolstered its appeal by expanding the Cool Kids’ Summer program, which features character meet-and-greets and dance parties from late May through early September. Furthermore, Disneyland Resort in California recently debuted a promotion offering free park hopping for children aged 3 to 9.
Disney also introduced a year-round incentive allowing young children to eat for free when their party books a stay at a Disney-owned hotel and secures a dining plan. These strategic efforts have proven successful in maintaining high guest volume throughout the year.
