POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A recent study has revealed that Britons are resorting to drastic measures to cope with increasing temperatures. Among the unconventional solutions reported are sleeping in kitchens and employing makeshift window coverings such as tin foil, cardboard, and damp sheets.
The study, which surveyed a representative sample of the UK population, found that many households are struggling to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures during heatwaves. “People are desperate for relief — and are trying whatever they can to stay cool,” said Dr. Helen Carter, lead researcher of the study.
The findings come amid growing concerns about the impact of climate change on the UK’s living conditions. The Met Office has issued multiple heat warnings this summer, urging the public to take precautions against extreme heat. “We’re seeing more frequent and severe heatwaves, and it’s crucial that people know how to protect themselves,” stated Clare Allen, a meteorologist at the Met Office.
Health officials have also raised alarms about the potential health risks associated with high temperatures. The National Health Service (NHS) has been advised to prepare for an increase in heat-related illnesses, similar to the preparations made for the winter flu season. “Heatwaves can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions,” warned Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a public health expert.
