POLICY WIRE — Kohat, Pakistan — A powerful explosion rocked a mosque near police offices in Kohat, Pakistan, on Friday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 57, according to local authorities.
The blast occurred when an explosives-laden vehicle was driven into the mosque, causing significant damage. At least seven armed attackers attempted to breach the police compound, leading to a firefight that resulted in six of them being killed, officials said.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and ordered enhanced rescue efforts. No group has claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). The attack follows a series of recent violent incidents in the region, including a roadside bomb that killed six soldiers in Hangu district the day before.
