Trump Administration Expands Immigration Restrictions to Legal Entrants

POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — The Trump administration, known for its stringent immigration policies, is now focusing on individuals who enter the United States legally. This shift includes a temporary halt on all immigrant visa applications as the State Department updates consular officials worldwide on new regulations aimed at preventing potential public benefits recipients from immigrating.

The administration is also set to cancel the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for asylum. This unprecedented move, reported by The Associated Press, is expected to face legal challenges.

Julia Gelatt, associate director of the U.S. immigration policy program at the Migration Policy Institute, noted that these actions reflect a broader philosophy within the administration that views immigration as detrimental to the United States.

The visa application pause, initiated in early August, is linked to new “public charge” rules that have raised questions among consular officers. This pause, expected to end by early to mid-September, affects those seeking visas for family reunification but not those sponsored by employers.

Gelatt highlighted the difficulty of rescheduling visa appointments, a significant challenge for applicants. She also mentioned the potential for litigation if the pause extends beyond the expected timeframe.

In a separate move, the administration plans to revoke B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 for individuals who have sought or are seeking asylum. This action, coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security, aims to deter individuals from entering the U.S. on tourist visas with the intent to apply for asylum.

Christopher Landau, a deputy secretary of state, criticized what he described as bogus asylum claims, aligning with President Trump\’s long-standing views on asylum.
