Ex-CBI Leader Provides £750,000 Loan to Business Group Amid Financial Crisis
Ex-CBI chair Rupert Soames loans £750,000 to struggling business group as it faces ongoing financial challenges.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — A former leader of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has provided a £750,000 loan to the business advocacy group as it works to stabilize its finances following a major scandal that nearly led to its collapse in 2023.
Rupert Christopher Soames, a prominent British businessman and grandson of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, served as CBI chair from February 2024 to December 2025. He previously led Serco from 2014 to 2023 and held the role of CEO at Aggreko for 11 years. His recent financial support comes as the organization seeks to reduce costs and restore public confidence.
The CBI has also appointed Rain Newton-Smith as director general, tasked with overhauling its internal culture. Meanwhile, the group faces ongoing scrutiny after a controversial lobbying initiative called Restore Trust was linked to former executive Biggar, who was reportedly involved in opposing the charity’s progressive policies.
