A mosque in Peacehaven, East Sussex, was targeted in a suspected arson attack late Saturday night, prompting a large emergency response and a hate crime investigation.
Police and fire crews were called to the mosque on Phyllis Avenue at approximately 9:50 p.m., after reports of a blaze at the entrance of the building. The fire caused damage to the mosque’s front doors and to a vehicle parked outside.
Authorities confirmed that no one was injured, and the fire was swiftly contained by emergency services.
Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna of Sussex Police described the case as a “fast-moving investigation” and appealed for witnesses or footage that might assist detectives.
“We understand the concerns this has caused within the community, and the impact that will be felt by the Muslim community as a result,” Bohanna said. “There is already an increased police presence at the scene and additional patrols at other places of worship across the county.”
Sussex Police confirmed the incident is being treated as a hate crime, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward hate incidents across the region.
Anyone with CCTV, doorbell, dashcam, or mobile footage from the area is urged to contact police online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Spey. Anonymous tips can be submitted via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
