POLICY WIRE — Pretoria, South Africa — South Africa’s Springboks defeated Scotland 42-28 in a Nations Championship rugby match held in Pretoria, reports indicated. The double reigning world champions secured the victory at Loftus Versfeld after a challenging contest against a resurgent Scottish side.
Scotland, having previously beaten England, France, — and Argentina this year, pushed the Springboks throughout the game. The Scottish team recovered from a 14-0 deficit to level the score by half-time. A critical period occurred early in the second half when Scotland failed to score while South Africa’s Ben-Jason Dixon was in the sin-bin, according to reports. South Africa then scored three tries within a 10-minute span around the hour mark. Scotland responded with tries from Josh Bayliss — and Ben White, narrowing the gap to a converted try. Jesse Kriel scored a late breakaway try for South Africa, sealing their hard-fought victory.
Scotland coach Gregor Townsend told ITV that his side was really frustrated we didn’t get more points on the board in the first half and that period when the Boks go down to 14 men. Townsend added, “I’m massively proud of the effort we put in, but it wasn’t to be today. It’s a learning for us, we’ve got to be better for 80 minutes.” He also stated, “There’s a lot more in us, and with the amount of opportunities the players created today through work skill and intelligence, we’ve got to take more to beat the world champions.” Townsend concluded that the match was “another step forward” for Scotland.
Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu also spoke to ITV, expressing disappointment over the loss. We were able to battle back but I thought the period after half-time hurt us a little bit. We had a lot of possession in their 22 and didn’t capitalise, Tuipulotu stated. He credited South Africa’s defense, noting, “But credit to them, they defended and scrambled well, like they always do.” Tuipulotu emphasized the need for better “Execution, I think. Execution when the pressure’s high, when you’re away from home. Little things like that.” He acknowledged that South Africa “showed a little bit better execution at the back-end of the game and got the result.”
The defeat means Scotland’s wait for a first-ever win in South Africa continues, according to news outlets.
