The incident, which remains the worst mass drowning involving migrants in the region’s history, occurred when a vessel capsized while attempting to reach the UK. The trial, which began earlier this year, involved 14 defendants accused of ties to smuggling networks that facilitated the perilous journey.

Among those found guilty were individuals alleged to have organized or assisted in the operation of the overcrowded boat. The case drew significant attention due to the high number of victims, including a seven-year-old child, and the involvement of 114 civil parties, many of whom traveled from Erbil to participate in the proceedings.
