POLICY WIRE — San Francisco, United States — A man known as the “rideshare rapist” has been handed a 150-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting multiple women while posing as a rideshare driver in San Francisco.

Orlando Vilchez Lazo, 44, received six life terms from a San Francisco court, including charges of kidnapping with intent to commit rape, rape by force or fear, and sexual penetration with a foreign object. Prosecutors allege he targeted women starting in 2013, luring them into his car under false pretenses and taking them to isolated areas for attacks.

The case remained unsolved for years until DNA evidence linked Lazo to an earlier 2013 assault. He was arrested in 2018 after another attack and later found to have worked as a Lyft driver despite being an undocumented immigrant from Peru. Lyft confirmed he had fraudulently represented himself on the platform.
