POLICY WIRE — Sheffield, UK — Legendary snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan has initiated his campaign for an unprecedented eighth World Championship title with a commanding performance against Chinese newcomer He Guoqiang.
The 50-year-old superstar quickly established a significant lead, claiming the initial five frames of their first-round encounter. By the session’s conclusion, O’Sullivan held a substantial 7-2 advantage, positioning him just three frames away from securing victory when play resumes on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite a reduced schedule earlier in the 2026 season, including his withdrawal from the Masters in January and participation in only three of six ranking tournaments, O’Sullivan has shown impressive form. His season highlights include reaching the final of the World Open in China last month, where he achieved a remarkable break of 153 points – the highest ever recorded in professional snooker history.
O’Sullivan’s Crucible Masterclass
Making his 34th appearance at the iconic Crucible Theatre, O’Sullivan wasted no time asserting his authority. Early breaks of 72, 97, and 113 contributed to his swift 5-0 lead, leaving the 25-year-old He Guoqiang, ranked world number 47, visibly struggling to compete.
Although Guoqiang managed to secure two consecutive frames, momentarily halting O’Sullivan’s momentum, the seasoned champion regained control. He closed out the session by winning the final two frames, aided by strong breaks of 52 and 86.
A victory on Wednesday would set up a highly anticipated last-16 clash against four-time world champion John Higgins, promising another thrilling encounter for snooker enthusiasts.

Trump’s Resilient Comeback
In another compelling first-round match, world number one Judd Trump demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering from an early deficit against Gary Wilson. The 2019 champion initially trailed significantly, losing four of the first five frames as Wilson, ranked 27th, built a formidable 4-1 lead.
However, Trump mounted a strong comeback, securing the subsequent four frames of the session. This impressive turnaround included spectacular breaks of 128 and 77, culminating in a narrow 5-4 advantage for Trump before their match resumes.
“The last couple of frames have been the best I’ve seen from Judd for a long time,” commented seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry during his BBC TV commentary.
Trump, aged 36, has maintained his position atop the world rankings since August 2024, a reign he aims to extend by reaching at least the last 16 of the championship. Despite his dominant performance late in the session, Wilson also showcased his skill with the highest break of the session, a superb 139 clearance in the fifth frame.

Pullen’s Promising Crucible Debut
Twenty-year-old Liam Pullen from York is making a memorable debut at the Crucible, having fought through four qualifying rounds to earn his spot. Despite having dropped off the World Snooker Tour last season, he swiftly regained his tour card through Q School.
Ranked 86th globally, Pullen displayed remarkable composure, delivering breaks of 57, 63, 97, and 58. He currently trails fellow Englishman Chris Wakelin, a quarter-finalist from the previous year, with the score standing at 4-5 as their match heads towards its conclusion on Wednesday morning.
Wakelin holds a one-frame lead, bolstered by breaks of 66 and 82. Nonetheless, Pullen’s strong showing marks another positive highlight for young English talent, following 19-year-old Stan Moody’s spirited challenge against 2024 champion Kyren Wilson earlier in the week.
