POLICY WIRE — Messina, Italy — During the Sicilian holiday of Ferragosto, thieves executed a daring heist at the Museo Regionale di Messina (MuMe), stealing priceless Renaissance artworks by Antonello da Messina. The stolen pieces are considered among the artist’s masterworks.
The break-in occurred late Monday night, with security cameras capturing the perpetrators disabling the alarm system. The thieves made their escape with several significant paintings, including Antonello’s renowned “St. Sebastian” and “Annunciation.”
Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the theft. Carabinieri officers are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing museum staff for any leads. “We are treating this as a high-priority case due to the cultural and historical value of the stolen artworks,” said Captain Giovanni Russo of the Messina Carabinieri.
Art historians and collectors have expressed deep concern over the theft. “Antonello da Messina’s works are irreplaceable. This is a significant loss not just for Italy but for the global art community,” noted Dr. Elena Ricci, an art history professor at the University of Palermo.
The museum, which houses a vast collection of Sicilian art, has temporarily closed its doors to the public as officials assess the security breach and work to prevent future incidents. “We are reviewing our security protocols and will implement additional measures to protect our collection,” said MuMe Director Maria Costa.
This theft comes amid a series of art crimes across Europe, highlighting the vulnerability of cultural institutions to such attacks. Interpol and Europol are on alert, offering assistance to Italian authorities in recovering the stolen artworks.
