POLICY WIRE — Naypyidaw, Myanmar — Myanmar’s military has significantly increased attacks on civilians since a new administration assumed office in the war-torn country, according to a report by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) on Monday.

The surge in violence is attributed to the tactics employed by Myanmar’s new military chief, who took command in late March as his predecessor prepared to become the country’s president.

ACLED stated, “Since the ruling junta in Myanmar assumed control, there has been a marked increase in attacks on civilian populations.”

Regional governments have simultaneously increased diplomatic engagement, attempting to mitigate the escalating conflict.
