POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — A 14-year-old Israeli student was killed and 24 others were injured when an unexploded ordnance exploded during a school hiking trip near the border with Lebanon in northern Israel, according to emergency services.
The incident occurred on Monday in an area known for leftover explosive devices from past conflicts between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The explosion involved what is believed to be a cluster munition left behind from previous hostilities, authorities said.
Emergency responders and local officials confirmed the casualties, with the Education Minister of Israel stating that school trips to the region may be temporarily suspended. Despite prior approval for the outing, warning signs prohibiting entry had been placed in the area by the national forestry organization.
