Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to Tianjin, China as part of his visit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled between August 31 and September 1- a period that marks his first trip to China since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020. This trip is Modi’s first official visit to China for bilateral talks since 2019.Though he briefly met President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Kazan in 2024, this full-fledged presence at the SCO gathering hosted by a country that continues to support Pakistan’s regional position has raised more questions than answers.

As India struggles with policy contradictions and the geopolitical whiplash it gets, Pakistan walks into the SCO summit with a coherent regional strategy. Islamabad has renewed its vows with Beijing, reinforced regional trade through CPEC, and still keeps principled positions on conflict resolution and multilateral cooperation. Its diplomacy may not be as theatrical as New Delhi’s; however, it receives quiet yet consistent respect across Eurasia and the Muslim world

A Damaged Brand: Modi’s Global Credibility in Question
