POLICY WIRE — Bay City, Michigan — For decades, 65-year-old Al Sager lived a life defined by independence, never seeking a romantic partner.
On the other side of town, 76-year-old Susan Guc led a similarly solitary existence, perfectly content with her unattached status.
Guc reflected on her past, once wondering if there was anyone she wanted to be with, only to conclude there was nobody. She stated that she was truly happy with that arrangement.
While Guc spent her career as a nurse focused entirely on her patients, Sager spent his years as a truck driver constantly traveling on the road.
The two were considered among Bay City’s most committed singles until this week, when they officially married. The sudden union left their family members in total disbelief.
One relative noted that everyone was shocked by the news, while another claimed they nearly fell out of their chair because they never expected the pairing.
Guc described the start of their relationship as a complete fluke.
The connection began a few years ago when both individuals underwent heart surgery and enrolled in the same cardiac cardiac rehabilitation program.
While Guc was using a treadmill, she spotted Sager working on an exercise bike. Although he was unaware of her presence, she was immediately struck by his smile.
To get his attention, Guc presented him with a rock that had the word “smile” carved into it.
Sager confirmed that she threw the rock at him to get noticed, though he noted she actually handed it to him. The gesture certainly caught him off guard.
Sager admitted he initially thought she was telling him he did not smile enough, which prompted him to look into the matter further.
Now, the couple is happy and wants to offer hope to others who believe they are too past the age to find a partner.
Guc admitted she once held that same belief but pointed to her own story as proof otherwise. Sager agreed, stating that it is absolutely never too late.
