POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — Kyle MacLachlan has shared an anecdote from his time on the 1995 film Showgirls, recalling how he refused a controversial request to appear nude in a scene.
The actor, best known for his role in Twin Peaks, described the surreal experience of filming a pool sequence where he was asked to walk past the camera completely naked. The director, Paul Verhoeven, and cinematographer Jost Vacano were reportedly in the water wearing tight swimwear, according to Entertainment Weekly.

MacLachlan recounted that during the shoot, Verhoeven suggested having him walk onto the patio fully exposed. When the director proposed filming the scene with a visible erection, the actor firmly declined. He said Verhoeven even suggested using a special effects technique to simulate the response, but MacLachlan remained resolute.
The scene was ultimately shot from behind, and MacLachlan confirmed it was not a body double. He also reflected on the film’s initial commercial failure and its later transformation into a camp classic among new audiences.
