Hong Kong Warns of Scam Sites Impersonating Official E-Visa Portals

POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong — Hong Kong’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) has issued a warning about fraudulent e-visa application websites. These sites, which mimic official portals for Canada, the UK, and Thailand, solicit personal data and fees from unsuspecting applicants, resulting in financial losses.

The PCPD disclosed in a statement on Monday that it has received 16 inquiries or complaints within the past three months concerning the submission of personal data and fee payments to these fraudulent sites. Victims have reported losses of up to HK$1,700 (US$216).

“The public should exercise caution when applying for e-visas and ensure they’re using official government websites,” the PCPD advised. The agency emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of e-visa application portals before providing any personal information or making payments.

In a related development, the Hong Kong Police Force has also cautioned the public about the rise in online scams. “Scammers are increasingly sophisticated, utilizing various tactics to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information,” a police spokesperson said. Authorities recommend using secure, verified channels for all official applications — and transactions.
