POLICY WIRE — Fort Collins, Colorado — The search is actively underway to honor outstanding female high school athletes across the Fort Collins region, spearheaded by Blue Federal Credit Union in partnership with the long-running “Athlete of the Week” series for the 2025-26 academic year.
Every week, five remarkable young women are selected as nominees, and the community is encouraged to cast their votes from Monday through Thursday. This specific period marks the 30th week of the current 2025-26 sports calendar, highlighting the fast-approaching spring championship season.
For this nomination cycle, the voting period will conclude precisely at 11:59 a.m. on April 23, with the announcement of the victorious athlete scheduled for later that same day. The relentless pursuit of excellence displayed by these young athletes echoes the dedication seen across all levels of competition, from local fields to professional arenas. Such sustained effort is also a hallmark in top-tier sports organizations, where strategic decisions shape team futures, as highlighted by recent developments like the Brooklyn Nets securing a multi-year extension for their coaching staff.
Members of the public are also invited to submit nominations for their favorite athletes for future weeks, with a weekly deadline set for 11:59 p.m. every Sunday. The final selection of nominees each week rests with the dedicated Coloradoan sports staff.
This Week’s Distinguished Nominees
The following Fort Collins-area girls, whose exceptional performances occurred between April 13 and April 18, are this week’s contenders:
- June Fuchs (Fort Collins High School, Track & Field): This senior Lambkins runner delivered an exceptional performance at the Roosevelt’s Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational. Fuchs not only claimed the 800-meter championship but also played a crucial role in Fort Collins‘ victorious 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams.
- Tatum Gentry (Windsor High School, Soccer/Track): A junior Wizard, Gentry showcased her versatility in two sports. She netted both goals for Windsor in a decisive 2-0 soccer victory against Rocky Mountain and then anchored successful 4×100 and 4×200 relay squads at the Randall Hess event.
- Miriam Huffsmith (Liberty Common High School, Soccer): Consistently ranking among Northern Colorado‘s leading scorers, Huffsmith continued to be a driving force for the Eagles. She single-handedly scored all four goals in Liberty Common‘s win over Sterling and contributed three assists across three additional games during a demanding week.
- Peyton Landon (Timnath High School, Golf): As a freshman, Landon is already making a significant impact, securing tournament wins and leading the Cubs in Class 3A this spring. She captured the individual title at a Longs Peak League meet held at Loveland’s Olde Course with a three-over-par 75, simultaneously guiding Timnath to the team championship.
- Addyson Smith (Fossil Ridge High School, Track & Field): Smith, a senior SaberCat, demonstrated her diverse athletic prowess beyond short-track sprinting. She secured the long jump title at the Randall Hess by nearly a foot and achieved a close second place in the 400-meter dash, missing first by just 0.01 seconds.
