Cuban Dissident Artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara Arrives in U.S. After Exile
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Cuban dissident artist and prisoner of conscience, arrives in Miami after serving a five-year sentence.
POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Prominent Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrived in the United States on Saturday following his release from a five-year prison sentence in Cuba. Otero Alcántara, designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, was convicted in 2022 for insulting national symbols, contempt, and disturbing public order.
Otero Alcántara landed in Miami, often referred to as the capital of the Cuban diaspora. His arrival comes amid calls from Washington for Havana to release over 700 political prisoners.
The artist’s journey to exile began after he served his sentence on the island. His work — and activism have long been a thorn in the side of the Cuban government, leading to his imprisonment.
“Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara’s arrival in the United States is a significant moment for those fighting for freedom and human rights in Cuba,” said a spokesperson for a human rights organization.
The U.S. government has been vocal in its support for the release of political prisoners in Cuba. The State Department issued a statement urging Havana to “immediately release all those unjustly detained.”
Otero Alcántara’s exile is expected to draw further international attention to the plight of political dissidents in Cuba and the ongoing human rights issues on the island.
