POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — Federal investigators have arrived in South Florida to probe a fatal crash involving an Amazon cargo aircraft that overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
The incident claimed five lives and left five others injured after the plane veered off the tarmac, crossed a Miami-Dade roadway, and burst into flames.
More than 60 units and approximately 200 personnel from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene, with the first emergency crews arriving within seconds of the crash.
“Our hearts are with the victims and their families following (Sunday’s) tragic cargo plane crash,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and are keeping everyone who was injured in our thoughts and prayers.”
Witness Grace Mercado described the moments leading up to the disaster while riding in a vehicle driven by her partner.
She recalled hearing a loud noise before her partner exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness. Is that a plane crash?’
Mercado looked up from her phone and saw the aircraft had already left the runway and crashed.
“It was extremely loud,” she said. “It was not anything that I’ve ever heard before. It was like a shake. Honestly, I cannot compare it to anything else.”
She described seeing thick smoke rising from the wreckage and said the sight resembled something out of a film.
It was just, it was like something from a movie. It was crazy, Mercado added.

In the immediate aftermath, she noted no ambulances or emergency vehicles were visible, though help arrived in under a minute.
“There were not any ambulances or anything,” she said. “But they ended up there in under a minute. It was absolutely insane.”
Mercado reported no movement near or inside the downed plane after impact, only dense plumes of smoke engulfing the area.
“it is something you do not see in real life,” she said. “So, it is surreal.”
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are now working together to determine why the aircraft failed to stop on the runway.
The identities of those killed have not yet been released.
