The incident reportedly occurred just down the street from the White House, in the heart of the US capital. An image circulating online shows an injured National Guard member lying on the pavement with blood visible from his head, while Secret Service agents administer emergency medical aid.
Since early August, armed National Guard troops have been deployed to Washington DC as part of former President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown, with around 2,000 troops from DC and at least eight other states stationed in the city.
Emergency services, including Secret Service officers and ambulances, were quickly dispatched to the scene.
“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, adding that updates will follow as the situation develops.
