POLICY WIRE — London, UK — BP’s Chief Executive, Meg O’Neill, has called on UK authorities to prioritize the utilization of the nation’s oil and gas resources. This comes as BP prepares to divest its North Sea operations after a 60-year presence in the region. “Where we generate jobs, we generate tax revenue, we generate all those additional positive impacts,” O’Neill stated.
During a conversation with the new UK Prime Minister, O’Neill emphasized the benefits of domestic energy production. “The country should prioritize using energy produced in the UK,” she said. This call aligns with recent revelations that major oil firms have amassed $93 billion in profits amid ongoing global conflicts and the climate crisis.
BP’s strategic shift away from the North Sea is part of a broader restructuring under O’Neill’s leadership. Nils Pratley noted that O’Neill is “unsentimental in pruning the portfolio” and is “clear on North Sea advice to Burnham.”
The company’s decision to exit the North Sea, a basin that has been central to its operations for six decades, underscores the evolving dynamics of the global energy market. As BP pivots, the conversation around UK energy policy — and the role of domestic oil and gas resources intensifies.
