Iran Reports Silence from Saudi Arabia and Houthis on Mediation Proposal
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirms no response from Saudi Arabia or Houthi rebels regarding Tehran's offer to mediate the Yemen conflict.
POLICY WIRE — Cairo, Egypt — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Tuesday that Tehran has yet to receive a reply from Saudi Arabia or Yemen’s Houthi rebels regarding its proposal to mediate an end to their ongoing hostilities.
The offer to facilitate dialogue was extended by Iran as the Houthi movement, which maintains ties to Tehran, ramped up drone and missile strikes against Saudi territory earlier this month. Araghchi emphasized that Iran supports a political process to resolve the conflict, though the diplomatic overture remains unacknowledged by both parties.
During an interview with Iraq’s Al Ekhbariya TV, Araghchi warned that external foreign intervention in Yemen risks further complicating the regional conflict. This follows previous statements from Iranian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh, who earlier noted the lack of response from Riyadh regarding potential talks.
Tehran has consistently denied allegations from Saudi Arabia that it encouraged the recent escalation in Houthi attacks. Iranian officials have dismissed such accusations as not credible, even as the UN Security Council issued condemnations regarding the intensified strikes on the kingdom.
