POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — Following India’s recent triumph in the T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) national selectors, in collaboration with the team management, are now meticulously planning for both the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the 2027 One Day International (ODI) World Cup.
A central aspect of these strategic discussions revolves around the critical management of star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s playing commitments. Sources indicate that the BCCI is keen for the 32-year-old pacer, whose distinctive bowling action places considerable strain on his physique, to participate in all nine scheduled WTC Tests throughout the forthcoming season.
Prioritizing Test Cricket
The priority this year lies in rejuvenating India’s prospects within the current World Test Championship cycle, despite ongoing discussions about the upcoming ODI World Cup. India currently holds the sixth position in the WTC standings, emphasizing the urgency of improved performances.
India’s WTC campaign for the current cycle is set to feature several significant encounters. This year will see two Test matches each in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, followed by a demanding five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in January of next year. An unrelated one-off Test against Afghanistan is also slated for June 6 in Chandigarh, though it does not count towards the WTC standings.
The overarching objective is to maintain Bumrah’s fitness levels sufficiently for him to feature in every Test match. He is anticipated to play in all four Tests across Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The primary challenge will be ensuring he remains in peak condition for the five crucial home Tests against Australia. To achieve this, selectors are open to resting him from certain ODI series.
Despite a two-year hiatus from T20 cricket, Bumrah showcased his prowess in the Asia Cup last September. Last year, he was available for three of five Tests in England, but the board now expects his full participation if medically cleared. He subsequently played all four home Tests.
Given that the next major T20 International tournament is two years away, Bumrah is expected to play a minimal number of T20Is. His presence on Indian pitches will be indispensable if the national team aims to secure a spot in the WTC final.
India has unfortunately missed out on WTC final qualification since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. Furthermore, the team has endured whitewashes by New Zealand and South Africa in home conditions, underscoring the need for a stronger Test contingent.
Selectors have communicated a clear directive: first-choice Test players must prioritize and be available for Test cricket when fit. This commitment to maintaining integrity and adherence to established protocols mirrors broader governance efforts, such as when the Indian Government Debunked Sanmar Herald’s Cryptocurrency Payment Claims.
Captain Shubman Gill has advocated for extended preparation periods between formats, particularly for significant Test series, a call that emerged after India’s recent series loss to South Africa. The team’s commitment to Test cricket is being taken very seriously, with insights and planning being rigorously applied. When India last faced Afghanistan in a Test match in 2018, all key players participated, with the exception of Virat Kohli, who was recovering from a minor back injury.

Future Middle-Order Prospects
Looking ahead, the team management is also identifying promising talent for the middle order. Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are currently seen as strong candidates. It is believed that Jurel possesses the potential to be utilized as a specialist batter, while Padikkal could emerge as a challenger for the number three batting position, potentially competing with Sai Sudharsan.
Furthermore, Gaikwad is regarded as a player capable of effectively countering spin bowling, particularly in challenging Indian conditions, adding another strategic option for the team.
