Sir Michael Palin and David Olusoga to Unveil Bayeux Tapestry Secrets in BBC Documentary

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Sir Michael Palin and historian David Olusoga are preparing to star in a groundbreaking BBC documentary that will the return of the Bayeux Tapestry to the UK after nearly a millennium.

The 70-meter-long linen artwork, featuring embroidered images of the Norman Conquest, will be showcased at the British Museum in London starting July. This marks the first time the tapestry has been displayed in the UK since its creation around 960 years ago.

The exhibition at the British Museum will run until next July, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the tapestry’s history and significance. The documentary, titled Secrets Of The Bayeux Tapestry, will be narrated by Sir Michael Palin and will explore the efforts to bring the priceless artifact back to the UK.

The tapestry, which depicts the 1066 Norman invasion and the Battle of Hastings, tells the story of William the Conqueror’s ascent to the English throne after defeating King Harold. The 60-minute episode will also feature insights from other historians and experts, including Professor Janina Ramirez and Dan Snow.

The documentary will address the mysteries surrounding the tapestry, such as its commissioning, creators, and intended purpose, providing a deeper understanding of the Norman invasion and its impact on the UK.

Viewers will meet the Franco-British team of experts who facilitated the tapestry’s move from the Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy, where it had been displayed since 1983. Former politician and academic Rory Stewart, who is involved with the documentary, described it as a unique way to understand the tapestry’s depth and detail.

Dr. Millie Horton-Insch, the project curator of The Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum, expressed her excitement about the tapestry’s arrival and the opportunity for audiences to learn about the immense effort and labor invested in its creation.

The tapestry is currently on display in Room 30 of the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery at the British Museum. The museum anticipates around 7.5 million visitors during the tapestry’s stay in London, with tickets for the exhibition currently sold out until December.

The next batch of public tickets for The Bayeux Tapestry exhibition will be available on October 21 for visits between January and March next year, with additional tickets to be released later.

Secrets Of The Bayeux Tapestry will be broadcast on BBC Two and will also be accessible on BBC iPlayer.
