POLICY WIRE — Albuquerque, United States — Firefighters successfully contained a brush fire that scorched approximately one acre of the city’s South Valley bosque on Friday afternoon.
The blaze, which notably involved a large cottonwood tree, was located in the woodland area just south of Avenida Dolores Huerta on the eastern side of the river. Officials from Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) confirmed the incident’s proximity to the South Valley Little League fields.
Rapid Response and Containment
The department’s specialized Wildland Task Force was dispatched to the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m. Through a coordinated and swift effort, emergency crews managed to halt the fire’s spread within an hour, declaring it contained by 4:30 p.m.
The quick response was crucial in preventing the fire from expanding further into the sensitive bosque ecosystem, a vital natural habitat along the Rio Grande.
Following the successful containment, personnel from both Albuquerque Fire Rescue and New Mexico Forestry remained on site. Their subsequent efforts focused on comprehensive mop-up work to extinguish any lingering hotspots and the removal of hazard trees compromised by the flames.
