Sen. Blumenthal Calls for Immediate House Approval of Russia Sanctions Bill Amid Ukraine Crisis

POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut has called on the House to swiftly approve the Senate-passed Russia sanctions bill. This comes at a critical time in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Blumenthal emphasized the urgency, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin may attempt to escalate the war. He noted that Putin’s economic situation is precarious, with a looming $125 billion deficit, representing 5% of Russia’s GDP, and a 14% interest rate on the national debt.

The sanctions bill, known as The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, was passed by the Senate with strong bipartisan support. It allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five purchasers of Russian oil or natural gas, with certain exceptions.

Despite some concerns from House Democrats about granting the president more authority, Blumenthal defended the bill, highlighting its successful passage in the Senate with an 86 to 11 vote. He stressed the bill’s provisions for imposing severe sanctions on Russian oligarchs and financial institutions, and measures to target the shadow fleet.

Blumenthal expressed optimism about the bill’s chances in the House, especially after his recent visit to Ukraine where he met with President Zelenskyy. He urged Zelenskyy to meet with House members, similar to his Senate visit, to garner support.

The senator’s call for action follows a deadly Russian drone strike near Kyiv, which he described as part of a nightly bombardment of civilian targets. He condemned Putin’s actions, stating that he is indiscriminately killing Ukrainians.

Blumenthal concluded by stating that Zelenskyy’s top priority is the passage of the Russian sanctions bill.
