POLICY WIRE — LONDON — Pubs across England and Wales will operate with extended licensing hours for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final match between England and Norway, the government confirmed. The extended hours will allow establishments to remain open until 30 minutes past the final whistle, even if the game experiences delays due to extreme heat, according to reports.
The fixture, which pits England against Norway, is scheduled for 10 PM BST on Saturday and will be played at Miami, Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium. Ministers had previously approved extended opening times until 2 AM for the match. This latest decision utilizes flexible laws to provide further allowance for venues.
Policing minister Sarah Jones stated that the extension is intended to ensure England fans have the opportunity to watch every minute of the quarter-final together. Jones referenced a prior weather delay during England’s game against Mexico, noting that the government aims to provide “complete certainty that no-one will miss a moment of the action” for both fans and venues. She expressed a desire for pubs and bars across England and Wales to be “packed on Saturday night,” anticipating England’s potential progression in the tournament.
England’s previous match against Mexico, played in the Azteca Stadium, was delayed by an hour due to storms. Licensing hours were also extended into the early morning for that game, which England won 3-2.
England coach Thomas Tuchel addressed the team’s preparations — and expectations for the upcoming quarter-final. Tuchel stated, I think we took a big step in our last match, but it was only a step. He added that the team remains “hungry,” possesses “dreams,” and has “a big goal to play for.” Tuchel emphasized that The next step is to win the quarter-final, and that it’s important to look up front, having left the previous match behind. He concluded, “We take the positive things and the belief with us, but everything that matters is ahead of us. It’s tomorrow’s match.”
The match conditions are expected to be challenging, with the temperature forecast to be 32 degrees Celsius when the game commences at 5 PM local time in Miami, corresponding to 10 PM UK time. England’s World Cup preparation camp was conducted in Florida with the aim of acclimatizing the team to such conditions. However, the team reportedly played in rain on three occasions and under a roof in their other two games during the camp.
Tuchel commented on the team’s heat training, stating, Science says that we banked a lot of heat training. That will help us. He further explained, “This week we spent quite some minutes in the heat and then we will go from there. Subjectively, for me, it’s always like ‘can you really prepare for that?’” Tuchel recalled the team’s arrival in Miami, expecting it “to feel painful.” He also expressed a lighthearted hope for “another dark cloud over the stadium! And full rain!”
The coach affirmed that all training and preparation since the team’s arrival in America was designed to prepare for these conditions, citing scientific backing. He suggested this preparation would hopefully give us a slight edge. Tuchel acknowledged that while the team had banked heat training, their actual games were either indoors or, in Mexico, quite chilly, which no-one could foresee. He concluded that the forecast indicates a tough one, but noted this applies “for our opponents as well.”
