POLICY WIRE — A murder investigation is underway following the death of 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe, who was found deceased at her Dartmoor home on Thursday. Police had arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the case, but he has since been released and is no longer part of the investigation, authorities confirmed on Saturday morning.
Devon — and Cornwall police were called to Ms. Widdecombe’s residence by the ambulance service at approximately 11:40 AM on Thursday, according to the original content. She had sustained “seriously injuries,” — and a neighbor suggested she had allegedly suffered a head injury. The original content also noted that a cordon remained at the scene with a significant police presence into Saturday.
Details have emerged regarding Ms. Widdecombe’s final known communications. Channel 5 presenter Dan Walker stated that Ms. Widdecombe, a regular guest, suddenly stopped responding to messages on Wednesday, moments before she was scheduled to appear on air for an interview on 5 Daytime. Walker reported on social media that the team contacted her agent to request a welfare check, and this information has been provided to the police as part of their investigation.
ITV News reported that Ms. Widdecombe had been in contact with a Channel 5 researcher earlier on Wednesday afternoon to arrange an interview for the Matt Allwright show, scheduled for 1 PM. Following their call, the two reportedly exchanged messages, with Ms. Widdecombe sending her last message at 12:19 PM. However, when the researcher messaged again at 12:48 PM, asking her to join a Zoom link for the interview, she didn’t reply. Subsequent follow-up messages inquiring about her well-being also went unanswered, ITV News stated.
A source told The Sun that the team made “multiple times on the phone and on text, but she wasn’t reading messages or responding.” The source added, “Obviously there was not much they could do except tell her agent she had not appeared and was not picking up calls.” The team reportedly found her unresponsiveness unusual and followed up with her agent on Thursday.
Ms. Widdecombe’s last public appearance was an interview with Mark Dolan on TalkTV, which aired at 8 AM on Wednesday. Dolan told The Sun that the interview was “like every other,” adding, She had her usual energy, passion and good humour.
Her death was officially announced by her representative early on Friday morning. Later that day, at 5:47 PM, Devon & Cornwall police announced the arrest of a 26-year-old man, identified as a white British national, on suspicion of murder. He was arrested in Newton Abbot, approximately nine miles from Ms. Widdecombe’s home. However, by 6:30 AM on Saturday, police confirmed the suspect had been released from custody and was no longer involved in their investigation.
Regarding the discovery of her body, one neighbor suggested that Ms. Widdecombe’s gardener, who arrived every Thursday morning, may have found her. Others suggested her friend — and carer, believed to live nearby, found her at home. The Sun also reported that someone arrived at the house in hiking clothes “in the middle of the night.”
